Inauguration of Community School Park at Harvard - 4/21/18

In Memoriam

Mrs. Estrada was Principal at Harvard Elementary for six years, from it's opening in 2005 until the 2010-2011 school year.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of Marilyn H. Estrada on April 23, 2016.  She inspired many of us to strive and led Harvard to earn a California Distinguished School Award in 2010. Mrs. Estrada will forever live in our hearts.

Orchestra

Mr. Howells, our orchestra teacher, gave an assembly for students in grades 3 through 5.  He introduced the violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone.  Applications for orchestra are due the week of August 27, 2018.   Students will be be responsible for bringing their instrument to orchestra on Fridays, are required to practice 20 minutes a night at home, and will perform in concert in December and May.

School Dress Code

Uniforms are suggested, but not mandatory for students. Students in uniform feel better about themselves and take their work more seriously because there is a sense of unity.  Uniforms eliminate the competition of designer labels and the latest fashion trends.

Summer is the best time to find uniforms on sale at stores such as The Children's Place, Costco, Target, and Old Navy.

Click here to see Harvard's Dress Code.

Harvard T-Shirts

We encourage students to show their school spirit by wearing their Harvard t-shirts and hoodies every week.

T-shirts are usually sold once a year. Kindergarten students who learn their first set of sight words and third graders who learn their multiplication facts receive a free t-shirt.

Harvard Elementary's school color is crimson, like Harvard University. Crimson is a dark, brownish red also called maroon or burgundy.

The Harvard Playground is a Community School Park

On Saturday, April 21, 2018, Mayor Eric Garcetti along with the Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP), and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) inaugurated Community School Parks on the Harvard Elementary School playground.

Community School Parks are designated areas on a school campus available for public use on the weekends at no cost to the public.  The public will have access to playgrounds and equipment provided by the Department of Recreation and Parks, who will also be providing staff to monitor the site activities. The schools are open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 P.M. on Saturdays and Sundays for children to have a safe place to play.

Parent Involvement Policy

Política de Participación de los Padres (Español)

Parent Involvement Policy

Parents at Harvard Elementary are considered to be vital learning partners in the educational and governance process. Together as partners, teachers, staff and parents learn about practices and strategies that promote literacy, math and science. Parents are informed of student achievement and standards mastery by:

  • Parents conferences held twice a year at reporting periods and as needed by teacher or parent.
  • End of the year report card.
  • Teacher will routinely communicate the progress of students who are functioning below grade level through notes home, phone calls or conferences.
  • Teacher assistants can provide assistance in parental involvement by providing interpretation to parents that are not fluent English speakers during parent conferences.
  • All parents are informed of monthly parent committee meetings with appropriate translation.
  • Communication with parents include monthly newsletters, bulletins sent home with students, personal phone calls, poster publicizing meetings, and letters sent from the teacher.
  • The monthly newsletter and flyers communicate pertinent information and upcoming events to parents.
  • Parents are encouraged to participate in the collection of data through participation in the English Learner Advisory Committee along with School Site Council.
  • Parents are notified and invited to special ceremonies that honor student academic achievement, citizenship, or attendance.
  • We have a School Community Liaison to help facilitate communication between parents, community and staff.
  • Parent workshops will be held to ensure that all parents are informed of the available school and district programs, as well as to provide support for parent to assist their children with schoolwork at home.
  • Parent volunteers are an essential part of the proper functioning of our schools because we are such a small school and any and all volunteers are needed and valued.
  • Parent volunteers are utilized for a number of responsibilities, including valet parking, helping teacher and students as library assistants, and in some cases as guest readers for a class.

Harvard is a "Pocket of Excellence"

Harvard Elementary is one of sixteen traditional (non-charter) schools in LAUSD that scored above the district average in both math and English language arts on the Smarter Balanced tests (CAASPP) for the 2014-2015 school year. Superintendent Ramon Cortines named these schools "pockets of excellence".  We would like to thank the parents and families that help support our teachers and students. We couldn't do it without your involvement.

Ms. S. Fang - Title I Coordinator

Reminders

  • Students dropped off by car should be driven to the Kingsley gate going south from Oakwood, between 7:30 am - 8:00 am.  Please respect our neighbors and staff entering the parking garage by not blocking driveways and double parking by the Harvard Blvd. entrance.
  • Please be at school on time.  Instruction starts at 8:00 am, but students may be picked up by teachers at 7:55 am to allow time to get into the classroom. Teachers will be taking attendance and giving instructions during "breakfast in the classroom".  Late students will need to get a tardy slip from the office.
  • Please make sure that you have an updated LAUSD Passport account. You will need an email account to sign up.

  • At the beginning of each year, your child will be receiving packets with forms and permission slips that require parent/guardian signatures. Please turn in all completed and signed forms as soon as possible.  Your child will not be allowed to borrow library books or use computers without these forms.
